Last weekend au pairs and families from Naperville, Aurora, Plainfield, Wheaton, Bolingbrook and Glen Ellyn, Illinois came together to help raise money for our two sponsored children, Theja and John, orphans from the Jiveetha Orphanage in India. Ikiwi in Naperville was very helpful in letting us take over their restaurant for the afternoon and all au pairs, families and especially the children enjoyed the frozen yogurt and toppings bar!

It is not too late to donate to these two children if you were unable to make the meeting. Their school fees for 1 school year are $60 each (so little!) and so far we have not covered that! Please contact Kelly about making a donation through Paypal. Cultural Care matches all of your donations!

The following blog, written twice a month, documents LCC Kelly as she attends Language Stars in Naperville with her children; Sofia, 6 and Andres, 2. In addition to having an au pair in her home, Language Stars has been her family’s resource for learning a second language at an early age.

I’ve always written about how Language Stars has been our resource in keeping my kids’ heritage language, Spanish, up and running. And I’ve also always written about our au pairs at home teaching my children a little of their languages. The au pair we’ve had for the last 18 months is Polish and as a result my kids also speak a bit of Polish. (And some Dutch but that’s another blog post.) What I didn’t realize until I overheard a conversation last night, was that my son is actually teaching my au pair Spanish!

Aleksandra had purchased some St. Ives face soap from the drug store and Andres drug it out of the bag. “Jabon!” He yelled. I have to say here that a foreign language on the topic of soap and washing hands is one of the first things kids bring home from Language Stars- because it is one of the few things that’s repeated in every class.

He climbed up on her lap and said- “jabon en manos?” She laughed, because after all, a little short guy who has just a few complete sentences in English, then spouting of some other language, is really cute. But to my surprise, she had understood him! No, she said, this soap is for faces. The conversation went on in Spanglish, but it was clear she had learned other words like boca, which is mouth.

Later we had a birthday in the house and my son sang Happy Birthday in Dutch- with much better pronunciation than anyone else in the house trying to learn some words. Kids are amazing. Our next au pair, to arrive in July, is Swedish. So here we go again!

The FunImmersion Chronicles - Volume 14 - Spiders!

Posted by: kpilleux | April 11, 2012 | No Comment |

The following blog, written twice a month, documents LCC Kelly as she attends Language Stars in Naperville with her children; Sofia, 6 and Andres, 2. In addition to having an au pair in her home, Language Stars has been her family’s resource for learning a second language at an early age.

Last week the topic at Language Stars’ Parent and Tot class was size. Large, medium and small. Apparently when they thought about this lesson and how to best present it, spiders came to mind. (All of the sudden my left arm started itching while writing this. Now my ear..)

I hate spiders. It seems like they are popping up all over the place. My daughter is having nightmares about them, or at least claims she is. I keep telling her they don’t come into the house, while they clearly are now that they’ve gotten a little chilly and the book we just read together, Vinegar Pancakes and Vanishing Cream, has a whole chapter on camping, sleeping bags and spiders. Now I tell her that they don’t come upstairs. They better not let me down.

So it was such a delight when my little, naïve son brought me is araña pequeña (little spider) on a stick the other day in class and I asked him “what do you have?!” and he responded “a fwower!” Yes! It’s a pretty little, black…eight-legged flower…with eyes.

By the end of the class I think he got the idea that they were spiders (I itch all over) and took the opportunity to pose with them. He never did touch the grande one though. He’s no fool. We also got to practice the nursery rhyme Araña Pequeña (Itsy, Bitsy Spider) in Spanish which I have been singing with my kids for years, thanks to Language Stars.

Look what my au pair can do…

Do I even need to explain what this post is about?

No I do not. Picture says enough!

The following blog, written twice a month, documents LCC Kelly as she attends Language Stars in Naperville with her children; Sofia, 6 and Andres, 2. In addition to having an au pair in her home, Language Stars has been her family’s resource for learning a second language at an early age.

This week at a mutual friend’s birthday party I had the chance to speak to another friend about Language Stars. They had been to a free trial class and were debating trying other programs around Naperville or not.

“Our daughter loved it!” The mom said. “She had a great time!”

“Great!” I returned. My daughter, Sofia, loved Language Stars and the only time period during her time there where she did not, was when she was ready early to move from the Parent’s and Tot’s class to the Kid’s Only class. Language Stars took a look at our situation and my daughter’s language progress and agreed to move us up a few months early. Sofia was just ready to be independent.

The dad said, “and afterward I expected a hard sell…but there wasn’t!”

“No, I said. I’ve known the staff there for years. They are very nice and easy going. They don’t need a hard sales technique because research supports their business. Children learn multiple languages much easier early on, it does not affect their 1st language learning, and it benefits them greatly later on!”

In fact, I was surprised last year to find Language Stars staff, later on one evening, at the local school district’s dual-language Kindergarten info session. Language Stars in not just a business. They have become very involved in language learning in Naperville. When you attend Language Stars, it’s like a family. I can tell you that 3 (yes, that’s 3) staff members in Naperville just welcomed new babies. Although I have stopped drinking the water there, we are all very proud of the new additions! The current center director has been involved in Naperville Language Stars for at least the last 4 years.

So what was the family’s hesitation? Well, when their daughter emerged from the class and they asked her to say a word she learned- she couldn’t think of one. Not even one.

I had to laugh out loud at that one. Not at their observation. It’s a common observation. I laughed because I thought of my daughter, enjoying class, week in and week out, refusing to say much of ANYTHING. And definitely refusing to repeat it outside of class. This is my same daughter who did poorly on an ENGLISH language test in Kindergarten (which all kids who report a second language in the home must take) because she REFUSED TO SPEAK. Yeah, same daughter who reads years above her grade level.

Children for sure do not walk out of Language Stars the first time speaking a foreign language. Certainly not on the first day and maybe not the first few months! If no one else speaks that language in your home, you may hardly ever hear it! But it’s up there. It’s up there because, except for very few cases with medical issues, the brain cannot stop from learning it. It’s a sponge. Four years later, my daughter now reads, writes and speaks in Spanish and is about 70% through the scale of fluency according to her school reports…as long as we aren’t listening.

One of the great things Language Stars does is keep the parents updated on the child’s progress. At least once a term you will receive a detailed report on your child’s progress. They are helpful because you can see your money is being well spent and they are useful for the future should you need the reports for your child’s future schooling or events.

Do children have a good time at Language Stars? Yes. Does it appear they are just having fun? Definitely. It’s a trick they play on the kids and it works. Who wants to LEARN in their free time?? Learn more about the FunImmersion method here.

And hey, just for fun, check out this video of a teenager who has taught himself 23 LANGUAGES.
